M.Y. Theatre and Film in the Community and Education
PRESENTS

An interactive performance arts experience for Key Stage Two

This Easter, M.Y. Theatre and Film Company are touring various theatres and venues in the Midlands with their production of the 1970 hit musical Godspell.
To accompany this tour we are offering a limited number of schools the opportunity to take part in a half or full day workshop exploring the Easter story through the medium of performance arts.
2 of our professional CRB checked facilitators from the world of theatre and film will work with a group of your key stage two pupils using scenes and parables from the musical to explore religious and spiritual issues affecting youngsters today, focussing on transition, team building and wellbeing.

We will also offer you the opportunity to host a production of the full musical featuring our young adult cast and musicians in your school hall or community centre for your pupils and parents after school.

The Fourex Files was devised and created by pupils from Newcastle Community High School in association with Concern Alcohol Newcastle, the police and the health services and focused on alcohol abuse related issues that affected young people.
The film was used extensively in primary schools as a teaching aid and went on to be featured on Central ITV and win the Princess Diana Memorial Award.
The Ghost of Houdini was devised and created by members of M.Y. Theatre and Film Company. This is a trailer for a full film production planned for 2011. Based on the lesser known history of Harry Houdini and his work as a secret agent with the CIA and British secret services it is a thriller with a horror twist. Supported by Real2Can and Reality Entertainment it will be distrbuted through Warners

Performance Arts as therapy: Embodied Arts have used performance arts to address a wide range of issues with a wide range of ages and abilities. We have specific experience working with children and adults with physical and learning disabilities as well as in mainstream education. Music, movement and drama not only enable people to find a voice and own their space but act as a bridge to reach across the perceived language barriers of dysfunction and disability.

Performance Arts as education : Once someone has found their voice they often need a platform on which to proclaim their message. We are able to provide that platform, not only through performance but in a sustained way through multimedia such as a film, piece of music or website documenting that message that can be used and viewed time and time again.

Festive Play In A Day

Under the direction of skilled and trained facilitators, Steve Mitchell and Jill Young, we would like to offer the children of your school the opportunity to work with our professional directors and M.Y. Theatre practitioners to develop a Festive Play In A Day.
A full day or two half day drama (impro and script), music and movement workshops resulting in a complete 15 to 20 minute Christmas mini production which the pupils can then re-produce as a Christmas assembley, part of a Christmas production or to open a Christmas fair.
With a Christmas Spirit theme, this production will be suitable for years 5 and 6 and we are able to adapt to numbers as required.

Workshop costs are £350 for either the full day or two half days. We will provide a minimum of two experienced, CRB checked, performing and teaching professionals.
For an additional £50 we can leave the school with a production pack, including performance notes, lyrics and backing CD

Teachers are welcome to support and observe the workshops

Our diaries are filling up fast so we recommend early bookings

Motivation Motorway

A series of thought provoking performance arts workshops designed to address the process of transition for primary and secondary school pupils.

Using a combination of proven, student led workshops our experienced facilitators will create a performance piece of combined music, movement, drama and media which can be further presented to audiences and used to enhance class teaching as well as disseminate a message to their peers.

The youth of today ARE our future for tomorrow: In order to avoid disenfranchisement and demoralisation we need to re empower children for their journey into adulthood. They will be the caretakers of the future of the communities, the economy, the ecology and the general well being of the local, the country and the world. They are our future.

Personal Growth and Rites of Passage: Our workshops and performances aim to put the magic back into childhood and enhance their transition to adulthood by giving them not only the skills but the enthusiasm and passion to see change not only in their lives but those around them. Not only does this have an immediate affect on the local community but enables schools and organisations to forge greater links in their neighbourhood and foster local participation.

Inter Curricular: With many years of combined experience, not only in schools and colleges but in professional theatre, film and special needs establishments to name but a few, we are well aware of the need for performance arts to support and inform the school curriculum. Not only are we able to take the pressure from teachers struggling from day to day to include these activities but we weave the topics back into the general curriculum in order to meet Ofsted expectations and make the experience truly holistic for all involved.

Issues: We find performance arts an excellent way to address many of the issues faced by young people today including

  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Abuse
  • Under age pregnancy
  • Bullying
  • Peer pressure
  • Learning and physical needs
  • Spiritual awareness issues
  • Transition through the journey of life

Multi Media and Sustainability: The problem with most discreet projects that come into schools and communities is that they hit hard and fast, have a noticeable affect and then leave the students wanting more and often feeling let down when it is unavailable. We aim to work not only hand in hand with teachers, staff and liaison workers so that work carried out can become ongoing but with room for further projects and follow up sessions. We like to have an outcome like, for example, a performance but have found that working with multi media to record or film those performances gives everyone not only a record of the event but something for the future. A film, for example, can become the next teaching resource for incoming classes and a valuable commodity for further workshops and peer led teaching.

Empowerment and Responsibility: The issues that face the youth of today are the issues that face us all. They are close to our hearts and drive our vision of the future. These workshops are cathartic and informing for us all and we strive to learn anew from those around us and those we work with in order to enhance our teaching and facilitate our own growth.
